It is a curriculum requirement of NTDET that all students in the NT participate in at least 2 hours of physical activity a week. This physical activity takes a variety of forms.
All classes at Nhulunbuy Primary School have physical education lessons with a specialist physical education teacher as part of their weekly ‘rotations’. In these lessons students undertake activities that enhance their fitness, develop their gross motor skills and learn a variety of different games skills. This can range from specific sports such as basketball and hockey through to track and field.
Students also have access to and can participate in sport specific coaching sessions delivered by a variety of sport specific bodies and their development officers. This can range from one off sessions for sports such as cricket, golf, netball and baseball to multiple coaching sessions for tennis delivered by the Tennis Australia Development Officer based in Nhulunbuy. Swimming lessons are also offered during Term 4 of each year for all students from Transition to Year 3.
SCHOOL SPORT NT
Students in the 10 to 12 year old age group also have the opportunity to participate in the School Sport NT program.
This program offers students the opportunity to participate in regional teams (Arnhem Cluster) that compete against other teams from the following regions; Darwin City, Darwin – Northern Suburbs, Desert Storm, Katherine Rivers and PARCS cluster. Intra Territory 12 years and under championships take place annually in the following sports: Rugby League, Netball, Basketball (Boys and Girls), Soccer (Boys and Girls), Australian Football, Cricket, Touch (Boys and Girls) and Track and Field.
These championships are generally held in various Northern Territory regional centres. Nhulunbuy hosted the 12 Years and Under Basketball championship in 2013 and Arnhem sent teams away to Darwin, Katherine and Alice Springs to represent the region in all of the other sports listed above. Students participating in these championships then have the opportunity to become selected in Northern Territory teams that then go on the participate in School Sport Australia age championships for those various sports.
